The Lost City, and Butterfly Springs (15-16 October)

Driving in the NT is a lot of fun, with long stretches without a speed limit. I laughed every time we hit a “limit” of 130, since the fastest the Troopie can manage is 125! The minor highways were less fun. We spent a lot of time on the highway through the Tablelands to get to the “Lost City” in Limmen National Park, which turned out to be a single lane dual way road. So there was a fair bit of getting off the road to make way for road trains.

Don't know why it's called the Tablelands

Greg almost ran over this snake. It was VERY ANGRY and tried to charge the car.

It ended up being a massive drive, over 800km. and we only got in under the cover of night. In the morning, from the car all that could be seen was a flat plain. But on the other side of the car was The Lost City.

I was told later there is also a Broken City which communities had to move away from, because people kept walking in and were lost forever.

Given that the day prior was such a long drive, the next stop was Butterfly Springs which was a mere 26km away. It was a beautiful place, with good facilities (well, fire pits and a toilet) and a fresh water pool to swim in. Heaps of butterflies as you might expect.

Spot the TINY FROG!

I really wanted to take some night pictures in this beautiful spot, but was thoroughly turned off by the masses of cane toads that turned out after nightfall. I couldn’t go a step without hearing a loathsome rustling in the bushes. It was the first time I’ve had to confront the reality of the cane toad. Worthless creatures, I don't rate them at all!
