Wave Rock, the way to Kalgoorlie, and a plane crash (5-6 October)

After the hassle of Mt Hassel, we ended up staying 2 nights outside of Lake Grace, then proceeded to drive to Wave Rock using only back dirt roads. Unlike on the drive down to Denmark, passing drivers waved constantly. Probably locals. Not sure if it was much of a shortcut, but it was a nice drive.

Not pictured: Me sliding down the rock face.

Wave Rock was nice—a bit smaller than I expected, but heaps of wildflowers and other cool things to see on the walk around it. Our next destination was Kalgoorlie so we took another back road, and used the Emu Fence Road. Did not see an emu, or a fence. Though we saw a sign saying “Plane Crash” which was only 9km out of the way, so went to investigate.

The crash was of the light aircraft Vultee Vengeance, in 1944. One of the pilots survived not only the plance crash, but also a 4 day walk with no food or water to safety. The other pilot survived the crash also but unfortunately even with an extensive search, was never seen again.

We never ended up making it to Kalgoorlie that day. Almost—ended up camping a night at Lake Douglas, just outside of it. We must have been the only people who, camping at the lake, did not actually camp within sight of it.

We spent the day in Kalgoorlie running errands and having a pint at the Star and something. We also stopped in at another pub just outside of Kalgoorlie, which was covered in graffiti (intentionally). We had fun trying to find the best graffiti. The oldest one I found was from 1991. I asked what they did when it was full up—knock the walls down and start from scratch? The bartender thought that was a good idea.

Unfortunately we didn’t make it to Lake Ballard like I was keen to, as the day got away from us. We ended up staying at Laverton Caravan Park where they had HOT SHOWERS. That was a good day.
