Leaving Laverton, we found a couple of Wedge Tailed Eagles
feeding off a carcass on the side of the road, and stopped to harass them. The
big mama in the photo was HUGE, with a wing span that could have been 2 to
2.5m.
We finally got onto the Great Central Road, and officially left
civilization and cheap diesel ($1.99 at Laverton, $2.33 on the road!) behind.

Unexpectedly good condition of the road. |
We took a 60km detour to camp at a
deserted homestead called Yeo. Thought it would be decrepit, but turns out it’s
quite well known and well maintained by CALM Kalgoorlie. In the guestbook there
was an entry just about every two days! Still, it had a working shower, even if
you had to organise pumping and heating yourself.

Relics inside |
We thought we would get the place to ourselves but as dusk came
on, a German fellow and his father popped in. Greg had a chat to them in the morning.
The young fellow was a herpetologist enthusiast and has a business in Germany
breeding Frill Neck Lizards. They had come from Kalgoorlie and were returning
the way we had come. We told them to go slowly because of the road conditions
and were assured that he would be—mainly so he could check out the lizards on
the side of the road.
